Complex Systems in Chemistry - The Crucible of Chemistry
Complex Systems in Chemistry - The Crucible of ChemistryChemical compounds are classified as either monomers or polymers. Monomers are the smallest building blocks of matter, while polymers are the basic components of most living organisms and materials. If we look closer, the most common compounds are monomers and polymers. The solubility of the organic compounds depend on their molecular weight. We can find solutes that dissolve in water, in oil and in ether. The solubility also depends on the acidity and alkalinity of the solvent. However, when a compound has been prepared in a chemical laboratory, the decomposition occurs slowly. The decomposition is carried out by the process of hydrolysis, which is when an organic molecule is broken down chemically to form simpler molecules.Hydrolysis in its simplest form can be defined as the breaking down of hydroxyl molecules and carbon molecules to amino acids and simpler compounds. The process of hydrolysis is sometimes described as the 'ge nerative process' because it builds up compounds by converting simple compounds into simpler compounds.Sometimes, chemical reactions are catalyzed where certain elements combine to form catalysts. In fact, it has been discovered that one catalyst acts on the addition of another catalyst to form even more catalysts.Chemistry is a scientific discipline that studies the behavior of solids and liquids in chemical equilibrium. The term equilibrium refers to the fact that the state of a liquid is maintained over a particular period of time. These 'equilibrium states' can be described as 'spaces' which are filled with substances that are in equilibrium with each other. In order to describe chemical equilibrium in a chemical equation, a molecular formula or a vibrational energy is required. A molecular formula is the state of a molecular formula where the terms of the equation are satisfied. It is similar to describing the motion of atoms in the molecules in the molecule and bonding to show how two molecules are related in a single molecule. For each chemical equation there is an equation for the state which has to be solved for that particular substance. The state is identified as either soluble or insoluble and describes the condition of the substance when it is dissolved. On the other hand, in complex systems, the system does not work properly unless the appropriate equilibrium is present. In this case, complex systems would require special tools like a mechanical system in which the system is made up of rigid components and electronic system in which the system is made up of the components made of conductors and the resistance elements.

What is it Like to Attend University of Massachusetts
What is it Like to Attend University of Massachusetts The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. Jessica is an Austin tutor specializing in many areas of math including Algebra tutoring, Calculus tutoring, Geometry tutoring, and more. She graduated from University of Massachusetts in 2011 with a Bachelors degree in Mathematics. See what she had to say about her undergraduate experience: VT:Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Jessica: UMass Amherst has what I like to think of as the quintessential campus setting. Amherst, MA is a small town in Western Massachusetts of which the UMass campus is the center. It takes about 20 minutes to walk the farthest distance across campus, or about a 10 minute bike ride. There are buses running every 15 minutes along various routes throughout the day. Driving to class is an option but with limited parking available, the easiest way to travel across campus is the bus, bike, or your own two feet. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Jessica: I always had an easy time getting in touch with professors, advisers, and teaching assistants. Professors and TAs each have drop-in office hours at least 3 times per week for 1-2 hours outside of classroom time. This is a great opportunity for students to approach them with questions in a 1-on-1 setting. Most professors even make themselves available by email during the week and weekends. Academic advisers are always available by appointment to talk about class selection or any other questions a student may have. The large number of advisers on staff allows them to easily manage the large number of students on campus. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Jessica: Dorm life on campus varies depending on which residential area you are placed in. Each area has its own dining hall, all of which have an excellent variety of food to choose from, but the quality of food honestly differs depending on which hall you are eating in. I lived in the same residential area for two years and I found the rooms to be spacious, the dorms to be clean, and the food to be excellent. But, the walk to class from my dorm was farther than others. Other dorms are also closer to the Campus Center where social events take place. Overall, each area has its pros and cons. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Jessica: Id say the programs in the Isenberg School of Management are best represented at UMass. This Business School is well accredited and very hard to get into. I studied Mathematics because it was always my passion and I knew I wanted to go into a career where a good background in Math was needed. The Math Department had excellent professors and resources, but we did seem to be overshadowed by the Business School (something that I think happens at all colleges). VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Jessica: I had a somewhat abnormal college experience because I was a member of the Varsity swim team. This means I came into freshmen year with a built-in group of 30 friends on the team so it was very easy for me to meet people. The friends that I had outside of the team have all said it was easy to meet people freshman year in the dorms. Its common to be placed in an all-freshmen dorm so everyone there is eager to meet people. Greek life has a small presence at UMass and is not necessary to have a good social life. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Jessica: The Career Center is always open for students to come in and review their resumes or talk about career options. They are helpful in providing information for upcoming career fairs where many companies come to recruit. UMass doesnt get as many of the big name companies that you would find at an Ivy League school but there are plenty of reputable names represented at the career fairs. Each fair is usually for a specific major or field so it is easy to narrow down which companies youre interested in. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Jessica: There is plenty of quiet space around campus for students to study or do homework. The main library has 26 floors for students to use but it still gets very crowded and hard to find a seat on weeknights. The student union is usually less crowded and still has the space available for students. Most classroom buildings have lounges or even libraries of their own for students to use during off hours. Its best to seek out these lesser known study areas when looking for the best place to get work done. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Jessica: Amherst, MA is a great college town. Its about a 10 minute walk from campus to the downtown area where youll find local clothing boutiques, ice cream parlors, pubs, and restaurants of many different types of food. About a 5 minute drive down the nearest highway is a shopping mall with a movie theater, more restaurants, and bigger clothing stores. Most students hang out in the downtown area on nights and weekends as this is where the bars and restaurants are. The UMass campus is also about a 20 minute drive to the nearest mountain range where many students like to go for weekend hikes. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Jessica: There are about 22,000 undergraduate students at UMass which sounds like a lot. During freshman year, this feels like a lot because the majority of the lower level classes will have anywhere from 100-300 students in it. This number dramatically changes as you take higher level courses later in your college career. Its not uncommon to have 10-20 students in these classes. The availability of professors during office hours makes a class of any size seem small because of how easy it is to get extra help. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Jessica: The first exam I ever took in college was in Anatomy and Physiology. I had been to every class and took diligent notes but I still didnt feel prepared for the test. The professor was holding an optional exam review the night before the test where she said she would answer any questions students had. I decided not to go, thinking that I could be more productive on my own. I got a good amount of studying done but after the exam I still didnt feel completely confident that I knew everything. I talked to a few students from class who went to the review and they raved about how helpful it was and how prepared it made them feel for the test. From then on I always took advantage of the extra help that professors provided. Check out Jessicas tutoring profile. 5 World-Famous Hispanic Musicians With Inspiring Stories
5 World-Famous Hispanic Musicians With Inspiring Stories 5 Inspiring Hispanic Musicians Natalie Hagen Many of the worldâs most well known and talented musicians come from a Hispanic background. The music of these singers, guitarists, and pianists has won globally recognized awards and transcended cultural borders. Several Hispanic musicians, such as Santana and Gloria Estefan, have overcome the odds to chase their dreams and here, weâll share their inspirational stories. Keep reading to learn about five artists that are sure to leave you motivated, encouraged, and moved. 5 Inspiring Hispanic Musicians Gloria Estefan Pop Singer Source: Jesus Cordero Gloria Estefan was born in Havana, but her family fled from Cuba to Miami when she was a young girl. After serving in Vietnam, Gloriaâs father became very ill. With her mother working and attending night classes, Gloria was left at home to care for her father and sister. These responsibilities were a lot for a teenager, but Gloria turned to music as an escape. She would lock herself in her room and sing for hours. In 1975, Gloria became acquainted with a keyboardist who later became her husband. He led a band called âthe Miami Latin Boysâ and asked Gloria to be the lead vocalist as soon as he heard her sing. The bandâs name was later changed to âthe Miami Sound Machine.â Their albums launched to the top of the charts, and Gloria was called a demure, Hispanic version of Madonna. Her story doesnât stop there, though. A car accident while on tour in 1990 left Gloria with broken vertebrae in her back. Never one to stay down, she made a miraculous recovery and was back on tour and making albums within the year. To this day Gloria Estefan is still making music, with many projects paying tribute to her native home of Cuba. Santana Guitarist Source: Libby Fabro Santana has become a very familiar name, working with artists from every genre such as Michelle Branch and DJ Khalid, but it hasnât always been that way. Growing up in Mexico, Santanaâs father originally taught him how to play the violin, but he found that he liked the electric guitar much more. As a teenager living in Tijuana, Santana started out performing at a variety of small venues. He later moved to San Francisco and spent his days working as a dishwasher in a diner and playing for change on the streets. B.B. King and Ray Charles were two of his biggest musical inspirations. Santana never gave up on his dreams though, and eventually decided to pursue music full time. What started out as âThe Santana Blues Bandâ later became known as âSantanaâ and gained a mass following, even performing at Woodstock. The crowds loved Santanas sound a mix of blues, rock, and jazz. The band released multiple albums that went platinum and Santana has continued to win Grammy awards. He also recently published a memoir called The Universal Tone: Bringing My Story to Light with the hope of inspiring others, and it became a national bestseller. Ruben Gonzalez Pianist Source: Ebet Roberts Ruben Gonzalez is proof that itâs never too late to pursue your passion. He released his debut album at the age of 78! Ruben originally studied medicine, but later in life he decided to pursue music. He was known for his Latin jazz sound and was requested by many bands and ensembles. Ruben was best known for working with the Afro Cuban All Stars and the Buena Vista Social Club, specializing in Latin dance and traditional Cuban music. His album with the Buena Vista Social Club won a Grammy in 1997, and that same year Ruben decided to release his first solo album âIntroducingRuben Gonzalez.â After releasing a second album in 2000, he died three years later knowing that he had done what he loved with his life. His music is still enjoyed by many. Placido Domingo Opera Singer Source: Barbara Davidson Both of Placidoâs parents were singers for Spanish operettas in Madrid, which definitely contributed to his remarkable tenor voice and musical abilities. This didnât mean that his success came easily, though. After moving to Mexico at eight years old, Placido began appearing alongside his parents in performances. He originally played the piano and enrolled in school to become a conductor, but later decided to focus on singing. Placido had a few small television appearances and often played in piano bars to earn money. At 18 years old, he began landing roles in various opera productions. Placido continued to work hard and eventually won a Grammy award for Best Opera Recording in 1971. Fourteen Grammys later, he is now in his seventies and lives by the motto, âIf I rest I rust.â Placido didnât even let health problems such as cancer slow him down. He is still performing, recording, and running a prestigious voice competition called âOperaliaâ to discover and nurture new talent. SEE ALSO: 20 Spanish Traditions, Customs, and Superstitions Selena Tejano Singer Source: Dave Einsel We canât discuss Hispanic musicians without mentioning Selena. Known as the âQueen of Tejano,â Selenaâs legacy lives on today despite her early death. (Tejano is a type of music that incorporates Mexican and other styles of music such as country.) Selena began singing as a child. She was the lead in her familyâs band alongside her brother and sister. The band originally performed at her parentsâ restaurant, weddings, and fairs. As their music became increasingly popular, the band started to record albums and go on tour. Eventually Selena was signed as a solo artist, and her Spanish-language albums received major accolades and awards. She began to work on her first English album, but before she could see its release, she was killed by one of her own fans at just 23 years old. Selenaâs untimely death was shocking to all who enjoyed her music. Her English album, âDreaming of You,â was later released in 1996. The album sold more than a million copies and introduced many people to Tejano music. Selenaâs story lives on, and she continues to inspire many with her impressive accomplishments in such a short career. Each of these Hispanic musicians are inspiring in their own unique way. From different regions and different walks of life, they all overcame obstacles to introduce the world to their musical styles and abilities. Tell us about a musician you love in the comments below! 5 Basic Guitar Chords 20 Easy Guitar Songs for Beginners
5 Basic Guitar Chords 20 Easy Guitar Songs for Beginners Sign up successful How to Play 20 Guitar Songs with 5 Basic Chords Smart Practicing If youâre just starting out on the guitar, itâs good to be aware of some of the challenges that every new player faces. The fact is that everyoneâs fingers feel awkward the first time they try to learn the guitar, but itâs important to stick it out at least until you have the basic chords down. Your fingers need to develop some strength and dexterity in order to switch between chords quickly, and the only way to do this is to keep on playing. Even five minutes a day for a couple of weeks will make a huge difference! Understanding Chord-Grid Notation Along with guitar tablature (or tabs), chord grids are an important shorthand method of notating guitar music. Although it is important for all guitar students to learn to read music notation eventually, tablature and chord grids are usually a better option for beginners who just want to learn simple rock, pop, or folk songs quickly. Remember, the notation is just a means to an end, and just another way to learn something youll play on your guitar. With chord-grids, you are looking at a simple diagram, or snapshot, of the guitar neck. The guitar is oriented so that the headstock is pointing upward; horizontal lines represent the fret-wires that separate the frets (spaces), and the vertical lines are strings. Dots inside the diagram represent left-hand fingers, which are placed over the string inside the indicated fret. For the A chord pictured here, all three fingers sit inside the second fret. Set your fourth (pinky) finger on the 2nd string, your third (ring) finger on the 3rd string, and your second (middle) finger on the 4th string. Often the left-hand thumb will stay anchored on top of the neck to deaden the sixth string. Alternatively, the edge of a fretting finger can be used to mute an adjacent string. This is called a flesh mute and allows the guitarist to strum all six strings so that only five strings are heard. 5 Open-String, Easy Guitar Chords for Beginners Once you understand the notation, the next step is to get the chords down by memory. In some cases, these basic guitar chords can be remembered easily by comparing them to geometric shapes. If you connect the dots inside each grid, youll see that the A is a straight line, the C is a diagonal line, the D is an equilateral triangle, and the G chord forms an isosceles triangle. After you have the chords memorized, its time to check each chord string-by-string to ensure all the notes are sounding. Pick through each string going downward from the bass strings to the treble strings. Listen closely to verify each note. If a string is muted, try resetting the fingers so they sit higher on the fingertips. Make sure the fingers do not touch against any open strings, thereby dampening them. Chord Change Drills Practice changing between any two chords using this simple drill. Play each chord on beats 1 3, lift the fingers completely on beats 2 4, and repeat. Make sure to set and remove all the fingers together (simultaneously). By doing this for a few minutes each day, you will learn to do fast and clean chord changes in the left hand, which is key to being able to play songs well. 20 Beginner Guitar Songs Using Only A, C, D, Em, and G Chords Now that youâve mastered the easy guitar chords for beginners, you can move on to learning dozens of new songs. When taking on a new number, start slowly and work your way up to the tempo of the song. Once youâve got it down, try playing along with the recording or grab friends and ask them to sing along! Many songs will have small variations in how the chords are played, and you can explore that after youâve got a grip on the basic chords. Hereâs a list of 20 easy guitar songs that use only these five chords: 1. Bad Moon Rising (Credence Clearwater Revival) 2. Eleanor Rigby (The Beatles) 3. Brown Eyed Girl (Van Morrison) 4. Catch the Wind (Donovan) 5. Clementine 6. Sweet Home Alabama (Lynyrd Skynyrd) 7. Lightly Row 8. Amazing Grace 9. Time of Your Life (Green Day) 10. Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star 11. Heart of Gold (Neil Young) 12. Old MacDonald 13. Story of My Life (Social Distortion) 14. Louie, Louie (The Kingsmen) 15. What I Got (Sublime) 16. Free Fallin (Tom Petty) 17. Anything, Anything (Dramarama) 18. Rockin in the Free World (Neil Young) 19. Mary Had a Little Lamb 20. Viva la Vida (Coldplay) These songs are just the beginning! If you need help mastering these chords or want to add more difficult chords (such as the F Chord) to your repertoire, the best way is to work with a guitar teacher near you. Should I Go To Oregon State University
Should I Go To Oregon State University The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teachtheyre sharing their college experiences as well. Elizabeth is a Portland tutor specializing in English tutoring, essay editing tutoring, SAT Writing tutoring, and a number of other areas. She is currently a senior at Oregon State University majoring in English Literature. See what she had to share about Oregon State University: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Elizabeth: The Oregon State University campus is located in Corvallis, Oregon, a relatively small town off Highway 5. The campus is somewhat urbanits only about a 15-minute walk from campus to downtownbut it still feels secluded when youre nestled on its 422 acres. Oregon State University owns a lot of the surrounding land around campus, so there are always peaceful places to take walks and enjoy nature. Campus is extremely safe, day or night, and there are free buses that will take you all over campus. There is also a van service called Safe Ride that will take you from many places off-campus back to your dorm or apartment. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants at Oregon State University? Elizabeth: Im really lucky with my major and my college, because liberal arts isnt one of Oregon State Universitys most popular fields. However, that just means more attention from incredible professors and advisers. Ive been able to create close bonds with my favorite professors, something that many of my friends in liberal arts majors at other schools have never experienced. I have also taken many classes outside my major, and all of the professors and teaching assistants that I have had have been incredibly engaging and helpful. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Elizabeth: Oregon State University mandates that all first-year students live on campus, which makes it incredibly easy to meet new friends. There are countless events held to allow first-years to bond and get to know campus and school resources. There are 13 dorms spread all over campus, and in all honesty, some are in better shape than others. The resident assistants are great, and they go through extensive training to prepare them to be great mentors for first-year students. The dining options on campus are varied, and getting better all the time. There are plenty of dietary options, and the people in charge are always happy to accommodate your dietary needs. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Elizabeth: Engineering and agricultural majors are best represented and supported at Oregon State University. However, Corvallis has been rated one of the most environmentally friendly towns in the United States, and Oregon State University has several LEED-certified buildings, and all of these factors have contributed to a strong environmental science major. I am finishing my degree in English literature, and I was always supported by excellent faculty and resources. While Oregon State University may not be known for English, I have had some of the most talented authors and scholars as instructors, which goes to show just how excellent even the smaller departments are at Oregon State University. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life at Oregon State University? Elizabeth: It is impossible not to meet people as a freshman at Oregon State Universitymost of your classes will be for first-year students, most of your residence hall will be made up of first-year students, and there are always events going on all over campus. Making friends is ultimately up to you, but there are countless opportunities to do so. Greek life is definitely present on campus. We have lots of sororities and fraternities that conduct events on campus and off, but they are certainly not the focus of social life. If Greek life appeals to you, there will definitely be a place for you at one of the houses. If Greek life isnt your thing, you will still be able to make amazing friends and enjoy your time at Oregon State University. How helpful is the Career Center and other student support services? Elizabeth: The student support services at Oregon State University, from the Career Center to student health, are incredibly helpful and always available for students. Its really simple to get an on-campus job if youre interested, and there are countless resources for careers after graduation. Oregon State University holds multiple career fairs per year, attended by companies like Boeing, Intel, and Oregon State Credit Union. There are also many different internship opportunities through Oregon State University that could take you anywhere in the world youd like to go. How are the various study areas such as libraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Elizabeth: You will always find a quiet place to study at Oregon State University. Though the library may get crowded during finals week, you can always find a spot in the historic Memorial Union, your residence hall lounge, an empty classroom on campus, or a cute coffee shop off-campus. Before and after finals, there is ample room in all six floors of our state-of-the-art library. There will always be room for you at Oregon State University. Describe the surrounding town. Elizabeth: Corvallis is a small, artsy town with an engaged community. There are lots of great riverfront spots, breweries, theaters, hiking trails, farmers markets, and events available throughout the year. Downtown Corvallis is beautiful and quirky, so people do tend to spend a lot of time there, but there are also areas of Corvallis with more practical spots like Home Depot, Winco, and Trader Joes. There are definitely times when the rain seems unforgiving, but during those weeks, its best to get out of the Oregon State University/Corvallis bubble and head up to Portland (about an hour and 20 minutes away) or down to Eugene (about 40 minutes away) to get a new perspective. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes at Oregon State University? Elizabeth: Oregon State University has about 30,000 students, but many of them are graduate and ecampus students. Campus never really feels crowded. Some low-level classes can feel cramped, like the health or biology classes that most first-year students have to take, but they are also great bonding experiences for freshmen. Its easy to meet friends in classes like that. I know that some larger departments (like engineering) do have bigger class sizes, but most liberal arts classes are small and very personal. I loved my class sizes, because I felt that I got a great combination of the more typical college experience with auditorium-style classes, while also being able to regularly enjoy 15-person English classes. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one you regret the most. Elizabeth: I had the chance to take a class about Gothic literature with one of the best and most engaging professors in my department. The class was relatively large for an English class (around 30 people) but everyone in the class was truly excited about the material. We got the chance to examine texts like Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde while discussing the ways in which the once-cutting-edge texts have changed over the years. We ended on a modern novelSlade House by David Mitchelland examined the ways in which Gothic literature has shaped our culture. This class was incredibly fun, and I was so engaged that I wrote some of the critical analyses that I am most proud of and intend to use when I apply to graduate school. Division with remainders tutors
Division with remainders tutors The basic mathematical operations in math are addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Division is one of the arithmetic operations used in different branches of mathematics. Division is denoted by a cross sign . The number which is divided is called as the dividend. The number with which the dividend is divided is called the divisor. Using the dividend and the divisor the quotient and the remainder is further determined. Long division is a useful method in division. In other words when we divide something there is sometime something left over and It is called the remainder. Example 1: There are 85 chocolates in a box. How many chocolates will each kid receive if they were to be divided equally between 6 children? Solution: Total number of chocolates in a box = 85. Number of children = 6. Number of chocolates per kid = Total chocolates / Number of children. Therefore, each of them will receive= 85 / 6 = 85 6. Remainder = 1; Quotient = 14. Hence, each of them will be receive 14 chocolates. Question: Multiple choice question (Pick the correct option.) What is the remainder when 726 is divided by 7? a) 3 b) 4 c) 5 d) None of these. Correct answer: option c. The first digit is equal to 7. Start with the first digit. Divide the hundreds. Use 7 x 1 = 7. Subtract 7 7 = 0. Now bring the tens place down. Divide the tens. Use 7 x 0 = 0. Subtract 2 0 = 2. Now bring down the ones place. Divide the ones. Use 7 x 3 = 21. Subtract 26 21 = 5. Hence remainder = 5.

Heart Math Tutoring Featured in The Mint Hill Times - Heart Math Tutoring Heart Math Tutoring Featured in The Mint Hill Times Heart Math Tutoring Featured in The Mint Hill Times February 22, 2018 Heart Math Tutoring was featured in The Mint Hill Times newspaper on February 14, 2018. We are grateful to The Mint Hill Times forsharing with the broader Mint Hill community how someone could volunteer to help an elementary student whoâs falling behind in foundational math. Heart is offered in 17 CMS schools, which include Lebanon Road Elementary and Piney Grove Elementary near the Mint Hill area. The organization is looking to add volunteers at both schools, along with others around CMS, Marion said. Heartâs programruns on volunteer time. The one hour a week a Heart volunteer spends means so much to students who just need an adult to give them one-on-one attention and build their confidence and enthusiasm around math and academics. âYou donât have to be a math whiz or math expert,â Marion said, while discussing requirements for volunteers. âVolunteers get the satisfaction of building a relationship with students while also helping them catch up to grade level in math. Right now is a good time to get involved since the commitment is only for the Spring semester, which is now through April. New volunteers will get the chance to try tutoring and see the impact they can make on students,â she said. Read the full story here.
